The New Niseko

Niseko, Japan is arguably one of the top Ski and Snowboard destinations in the world. The secret is out and anyone who has experience the champagne powder the area has to offer almost inevitably comes back for more.

My personal experience of Niseko came almost a decade ago, I was of course bought there by my hunger for snowboarding, specifically my hunger for powder. In this corner of the world not only can one ride all day but also at night and your first experience of "Night Riding" at Grand Hirafu is not one ever forgotten. Back then the only thing that Niseko lacked was Apres Ski opportunities. Now things have changed.

The Skiing and Snowboarding is essentially the same (although new lifts have opened up even more terrain) however were there was only a tiny handful of bars and restaurants, in 2006 new bars and restaurants continue to open and every year the restaurants and nightlife get better.

New accommodation abounds and no longer does one struggle to find places to stay. If you're lucky enough to be staying in the right location it is possible to ski or snowboard right back to your door step after a day or night on the hill.

Niseko isn't only a winter resort, recreational opportunities abound right through the summer. These include hiking, kayaking, rafting, mountain biking and if you don't feel like getting that physical just sit back and enjoy the spectacular views the area has to offer or really relax the Japanese way in one of the Niseko areas famous Onsens.

Whenever you decide to visit Niseko you won't be disappointed, wether you choose new western style accommodation or a traditional Japanese pension, if you come in the winter or the summer you can find what you need be it relaxation or excitement.
