Last Taste of Winter?

After a week of warm weather and not so good conditions on the mountain here in Niseko we got what maybe is the last taste of winter?? So after a week off from the epic season we've had everybody was brought to life again by the latest snow. Wednesday night saw a great night session on the hill with everybody I bumped into stoked that the rain had again tuned back to snow. Thursday then saw some great turns at Hanazono in the infamous strawberry fields and the for keen ones amongst us it was off to the the not so secret Chisenupuri for untracked turns.

In sickness and in health....

Spending time in the mountains is one of the greatest past times imaginable, your surroundings are some of the most beautiful that can be experienced anywhere and on top of this you have the added excitement and adrenalin that goes with skiing or snowboarding. Mountains however are not only known for their beauty but also the dangers that lurk amongst them.

GET THERE

GET THERE

Spot of day goes to Kamui Ski Links. Kamui is approximately 2 hours from Sapporo via the expressway (with a toll) and about 1 hour from Asahikawa. This ski area is as low key as you will ever find and sits in above acres of snow covered farmland near fukugawa.

Hokkaido Snow Update

After a slightly slow start to the winter here in Hokkaido things are now well and truly in full swing. The snow banks in Sapporo continue to grow and surrounding resorts such as Sapporo Kokusai and Teine Highlands are in superb condition. In Niseko it appears someone once again forgot to turn off the powder machine as the whole mountain has been regularly blanketed in snow for the last few weeks.

Sky Clears for Niseko

Just a quick update today to say it was awesome to see the sun and get on the mountain today. Yahoo weather forecast was not right but by Saturday the snow will settle back in. Enjoy todays photo of Hirafu from Route 5 and yesterdays photo of the peak clearing.

Happy New Years Niseko from Mother Nature

After a warm and slow start to the winter, Christmas and New Year in Niseko and more specifically Niseko Annupuri has seen daily top ups of snow with little sign of it stopping. Niseko is now looking the way it should be this time if year and possibly better than this same time last year. So for those still humming and ha-ing or waiting for mother nature to supply the goods now is no better time to come to Niseko. Check out some photos below from the last couple of weeks to give you an idea of how its been and also check out Yahoo Japan's weather to see how its going to be.

JIEITAI: The Japanese Self Defense Force

It's quite a sight when one hits the slopes and the only other people on the slopes are Japanese Jieitai or self defense force training for the opening scene of the up and coming James Bond movie being made in Niseko. Well not quite the truth but zooming past them all does make you feel like you 're in a movie and they are also quite conducive to having their photo taken.

Just like clockwork

Just as the forecast promised the snow settled in last Friday and it now seems like the Niseko snow machine in back in action. Today saw the cloud break for an afternoon of sun and a chance to check out the mountain, duck off piste and into the trees for fresh lines. Niseko Annupuri, the mountain that Niseko United ski resort is on, is looking in great condition for the Christmas and New Year holiday makers with more snowfalls in the next week in the forecast.

Early Winter

Last weekend saw another two great days on the mountain, just as everybody was thinking when is the next snowfall going to come. It is always like this in early winter, it snows and warms up, rains and then the snow line recedes back up the mountain. This process of the it snowing and then raining and then the snow finally settling for 3 months is something that we can only hope is over fast so that we can get out daily fix. We are lucky here in Niseko that the snow is so consistent and that we can go riding almost everyday with fresh line to be had.

Grand Hirafu, Higashiyama, Annupuri, Kokusai,Open!!!

Last weekend brought the day everyone had been waiting for, opening day ! Mother natures timing was perfect, just a few days before things were looking a little sketchy, snow was a little, as they say thin on the ground but about Wednesday last week it began to snow again, and when Saturday came around the mountains that were planning to open opened, and opened in style.
